John Porterfield

Biography of John Porterfield

John Porterfield (fl 1571) was briefly Archbishop of Glasgow and Chancellor of the University in 1571.

Porterfield had been appointed minister of Dumbarton in 1564 and of Kilmaronock in 1567. In 1571 he was nominated to the Archbishopric of Glasgow but he was never consecrated and abandoned the temporality in 1572. He was the first of the so-called "Tulchan" archbishops of Glasgow to be appointed after the Reformation: they were archbishops in name only, and the revenue from their sees was appropriated by their lay or Royal patrons.
