John Strang
Biography of John Strang
John Strang (1584-1654) was Principal of the University from 1626 until 1650. In 1630 he embarked on a programme of reconstruction of the University buildings and he gifted 500 Marks to the subscription list.
Strang was the Minister of Errol and a cousin of James Law, Archbishop of Glasgow and Chancellor of the University. His son was appointed a regent in 1648.
In April 1650 Strang bowed to pressure from hard-line Covenanters in the church and resigned as Principal. He was granted an annuity of 1,000 Merks from the University and continued to live there until 1653.
