Biography of John Gracie

Captain John Gracie was a medical student and graduate of the University.

He was born on the 16th November 1876 in Ardnamurchan, Inverness-shire, the son of John Gracie, a manager.

Gracie initially enrolled at the University in 1892, aged 15, to study for an Arts Degree. He registered to take classes in Humanity, Greek and Mathematics in 1892-93, and English Literature 1893-94. For the session 1894-95, Gracie enrolled in the Medical Faculty, and began working towards a new degree in Medicine. After 6 years studying medicine, and 8 years overall, Gracie graduated MBChB from the University on the 19th July 1900

Upon graduating, Captain Gracie worked as a doctor. During the First World War, he served as a Medical Officer in the 3rd Scottish General Hospital. Nurses’ annual reports bearing Captain Gracie’s signature c1915 indicate that part of his role was being responsible for stating whether or not a nurse was fit for active service.
