Auguste Boyes

Biography of Auguste Boyes

Auguste Boyes is a graduate of the University of Glasgow, and among the earliest female medical practitioners in Scotland.

She was born in Broughty Ferry, the daughter of Thomas James Gilchrist Boyes, a solicitor.

Auguste graduated MB ChB from the University in 1899. As such, she was amongst the earliest women to be educated at the University, graduating only five years after the first graduating cohort of female medical students.

Upon leaving University, Auguste worked as a doctor. Records show that she was 'by a majority of seven votes to five, appointed resident physician at Merryflatts Fever Hospital, Shieldhall, South Govan. This is the first lady doctor in Scotland who has been elected to such a post." Her subsequent career took her through various hospital appointments, before she returned to Dundee in 1919 and moved into general practice in Broughty Ferry. She remained here until her death in June 1943.
