Gertrude Dorman Bostock was born on 1st December 1877 in Stafford, Staffordshire, England. She was the daughter of influential industrialists Henry Bostock and Alice Susannah Marson. The Bostock family were well liked and highly regarded in Stafford as they were large employer for the local community. Gertrude was well educated prior to attending University as were all her other ten siblings. The family lived in The Oaklands, Stafford, a large stately home built for them by local architect Samuel Dorman.

Gertrude began studying for her BSc at the age of 18 in 1896. Whilst at the University of Glasgow Emily lived at 52 Lawrence Street, Dowanhill. She took classes in zoology, botany, natural philosophy and chemistry. Her final exams were in zoology, physiology and anatomy of which she passed first time. Gertrude graduated with a BSc in Pure Science on 17th April 1900. Soon after she started working towards her MB ChB of which she also passed all exams on first attempt and graduated on 21st July 1903. Gertrude’s academic career was exemplary, she won 22 prizes during her time at the University including; first class certificates in natural philosophy, chemistry and embryology. She was also awarded a medal for her practice of medicine during her MB ChB.

After Gertrude’s final graduation in 1903 she began working as a researcher of physiological chemistry and wrote many academic papers including the First Book of Physiology & Hygiene. She worked in the laboratory for four years prior to her marriage to Edward Provan Cathcart; a fellow University of Glasgow graduate whom she married at St. Chad’s Parish Church in Stafford. Although after marriage Gertrude had less direct involvement in the sciences she maintained relationships with co-workers through her husband's work and is described as being a “kindly and sympathetic hostess and friend”.
