Biography of Joe Thomson

Joseph McGeachy (Joe) Thomson (1948-2018) was Regius Professor of Law at the University from 1991 to 2005, then an Honorary Professor in the School of Law.

Thomson attended Keil School in Dumbarton. He studied Law at the University of Edinburgh and graduated LLB in 1970. Following graduation, he took up a position as Lecturer in Law at the University of Birmingham. In 1974 he became Lecturer in Laws at King's College, London. He moved to the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow in 1984 where he was Professor of Law until 1991.

Professor Thomson is the author of text books on Family Law, Delict and Contract. His main research was in the field of Scots private law. He was elected to a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1996. He was a Commissioner of the Scottish Law Commission from 2000-2009, and also served as an Honorary Sheriff in Campbeltown until 2017.
