Biography of Madge Easton Anderson

Madge Easton Anderson (1896-1982) was the first woman to graduate from the University with a degree in Law. She was born in Glasgow and was the daughter of Robert Easton whose occupation was a Surgical Instrument Maker.

Anderson was educated at Hutcheson's Grammar School and matriculated to study at the University in 1913. She graduated MA(Ord) on 26 Jun 1916, BL on 8 Nov 1919, then LLB on 20 Apr 1920, and went on to work as a solicitor. She was the first woman to be admitted to the legal profession in the United Kingdom.

During her MA degree Anderson studied subjects such as Latin, French, Greek, English, Zoology and Moral Philosophy; and before beginning her law degree in 1917 Anderson took a gap in studies. During her law degrees Anderson studied subjects such as Civil Law, Public International Law, Constitutional Law and History as well as Law of Scotland.

Madge also received a variety of prizes for her studies during her law degrees, including a first class certificate of merit in Evidence and Procedures, International Private Law and Public International Law.
