Gopaul Chunder Roy, FRCS, from Calcutta was the first Indian student to graduate at the University of Glasgow, graduating with a MD in 1871.

As well as publishing extensively in medical journals, such as the Indian Medical Gazette, Roy was a medical officer in Burdwan, a teacher of medicine at Nagpur Medical School, and a Surgeon in the Bengal Army, when he died in 1887.

His book on Burdwan fever, first published in 1876, is still in print today, "The causes, symptoms and treatment of Burdwan fever, or, The epidemic fever of Lower Bengal."
