Jan McDonald (1941-) is Professor Emerita and Honorary Professorial Research Fellow in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies. She has also been Dean of Faculties since 2007.

She graduated from the University with an MA Honours degree in English Language and Literature in 1963 and became a Research Fellow and then Assistant Lecturer in that Department, before moving to the newly founded Department of Drama with Professor James Arnott in 1966. In 1979 she succeeded Professor Arnott in the Chair of Drama, which now bears his name. She also served on the University Court from 1991-1994.

Professor McDonald's principal research interests are in Victorian and Edwardian theatre history and dramatic literature. Outside the University she chaired the Drama Committee of the Scottish Arts Council, the Citizens' Theatre Board, the Creative and Performing Arts Committee of the CNAA, and the Music and Performing Arts Panel of the Arts and Humanities Research Board (now Council).

She is a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, of which she was Vice President (Arts and Humanities) from 2005-8.
