Biography of David Caldwell McVail
David Caldwell McVail was born on in October 1845 in Kilmarnock. He graduated from the University of Glasgow MB in 1876.
He received his early education at Kilmarnock Academy, and enrolled in the University in 1873 to study medicine, aged 28. He had previously been trained at the Andersonian College and had worked as an apprentice for a local druggist. In 1877 McVail was elected Fellow of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He succeeded Dr. Eben Watson as Professor of Physiology in the Andersonian, College, and later worked as the dispensary physician for the Western Infirmary.
Caldwell was extremely active within the University Court, serving as a member for over 25 years. He was appointed a Crown representative for Scotland on the General Medical Council in 1892, working on improving medical education. He passed away on November 4, 1917 aged 73.
