William Barron Stevenson

William Barron Stevenson (1869-1954) was Professor of Hebrew and Semitic Languages at the University from 1907 to 1937 and Dean of Faculties from 1953 until his death in 1954. He was awarded an LLD in 1938.

Stevenson was a graduate of the University of Edinburgh who was Professor of Hebrew and Semitic Languages at Bala Theological College in Wales before his appointment to the Glasgow chair. He was the author of many books and articles including The Crusaders in the East (1907) and Grammar of Palestinian Jewish Aramaic (1924). He was President of the Glasgow University Oriental Society for more than thirty years and in 1945 the Society published a volume of Oriental studies in his honour.
