James John MacLehose graduated from the University MA 1878. He was awarded an honorary LLD from the University in 1915 and was also partner in the firms of James MacLehose & Sons, booksellers to the University, and Robert MacLehose & Co.

James John MacLehose was born in Glasgow 9th April 1857. He was the second son of James MacLehose (1811-1885) who was appointed as the University's bookseller in 1864, and then as publisher to the University in 1871.

James J. MacLehose first attended the University in 1872 and studied Mathematics. He also studied subjects such as Logic and English Literature during his time at the University and graduated from the University of Glasgow MA in 1878. The University later awarded James John MacLehose the honorary degree of LLD in a ceremony on the 21st June 1915.

MacLehose held many positions within printing including Chairman and a Managing Director of Robert MacLehose & Co. Ltd, printers to the University of Glasgow; President of the Federation of Master Printers and Allied Trades of Great Britain (1921-22); Chairman of the Joint Industrial Council of Printing and Allied Trades of the United Kingdom (1921-22); and Trustee of the National Library of Scotland. He was also an editor of the Scottish Historical Review (1903-1928).

James J. MacLehose and his brother Robert donated a collection of pamphlets and University Press publications to the University to act as a memorial to their father, James, who had founded the publishing firm and always "took a very warm interest in the University of Glasgow".
