Biography of Walter Campbell of Shawfield

Walter Campbell of Shawfield (1741-1816) was Rector of the University from 1789 to 1791.

Campbell was an advocate who succeeded to his brother Daniel's Islay estate in 1777. He is remembered for his extensive agriculture and communications improvement schemes on the island, and one observer said of him in 1808 that he was "the first of the Hebridean improvers".
