Biography of James William Montgomery 1st Baronet

Sir James William Montgomery, 1st Baronet (1721-1803) was Rector of the University from 1775 to 1777.

A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, Montgomery became a lawyer and MP who was appointed Lord Advocate in 1766 and created Lord Chief Baron of the Scottish Exchequer in 1775. He was created a baronet in 1801. He was one of the original fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
