Michael Kelly

Michael Kelly (1940- ) was University Rector from 1984 until 1987. He was awarded an honorary LLD in 1984.

A graduate of the University of Strathclyde, Kelly became a lecturer in Economics there and a Labour councillor. He was Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1980 to 1984. He led the highly successful campaign to improve the city's image under the slogan "Glasgow's Miles Better" and from 1984 he was Managing Director of the pr company, Michael Kelly Associates.

The unsuccessful candidates in the 1984 election were the Palestinian political leader Yasser Arafat; the Liberal MP and University graduate Menzies Campbell; the actor and comedian Rikki Fulton; the Conservative MP Jeffrey Archer, and the Scottish Republican Socialist and bank robber Matthew Lygate.
