Biography of William Reid Birrell

William Reid Birrell (c 1880-1922) was an alumnus of the University who founded the Reid Birrell Prizes in Naval Architecture.

Born in Glasgow, Birrell was the son of the owner or one of the directors of the Clyde Rubber Works Co, India rubber manufactures. He lived in the family house at 5 Rosslyn Terrace in the Kelvinside district of the city for all of his adult life. He studied Naval Architecture and Mathematics at the University from 1898 until 1902 but did not graduate.
