Biography of Thomas William Miller

Able Seaman Thomas William Miller was born in Motherwell and graduated MA from the University in 1937. He joined the Royal Navy and served aboard the escort aircraft carrier HMS Avenger.

On 15 November 1942 Avenger was sailing for the Clyde from Gibralter when she was struck by three torpedoes fired by a German U-Boat. Mackle was one of more than 500 men killed in the huge explosion which followed.
