Frederick Wainman

Captain Frederick Murray Wainman of the RAMC attended the High School of Glasgow and studied at the University, where he graduated BSc in 1936 and MB, ChB in 1939. After working as a resident at the city's Western Infirmary he joined the army in May 1940.

Wainman landed at Suez in 1941 with the Royal Army Service Corps and was transferred at his own request to the 1st Battalion, Royal Tank Regiment (7th Armoured). He served with the battalion in engagements from the Battle El Alamein to the campaign in Italy. In June 1944 he was sent to Normandy with the 2nd Field Ambulance but volunteered to return to his old unit, the 1st Battalion RTR. He was killed in an air raid near St Pierre-sur-Dives on 20 August 1944.
