Biography of Sidney Seymour Smith

Sidney Seymour Smith graduated from the University MA 1934.

He entered the University in 1928 and studied subjects such as Moral Philosophy and Geography.

During WWII he served as a Signalman in the Royal Corps of Signals. He was taken as a Prisoner of War in Italy, managed to escape, and was sheltered by the Mazzoni family near Montelparo, Le Marche. He was known as ‘Giorgio’ to the Italians though unfortunately he was betrayed by a spy and shot on 21st March 1944.

He is still remembered in Italy and flowers are placed on the iron cross that marks the spot where he fell. His gravestone is in Coriano Ridge War cemetery in Italy.
