Biography of Gavin Burns Henderson
Gavin Burns Henderson (1909-1945) was Senior Lecturer in History at the University and an authority on international diplomacy at the time of the Crimean War. He was educated in Belfast, Nottingham and London and graduated BA from Selwyn College, Cambridge, in 1931. He was awarded his doctorate in 1934 and the following year was appointed a lecturer at the University. Henderson was the brother of the Economic Historian WO Henderson.
Henderson was employed as a lecturer by the Ministry of Information during the war. In October 1941 he became a full-time lecturer to the Forces, on leave of absence from the University, and he travelled abroad frequently. In 1945 he was killed in an air crash while on a month-long lecture tour of Italy.
