Biography of Herbert Smith

Herbert Smith (d 1951) was William Jacks Professor of Modern Languages from 1919 to 1951. He was Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1924 to 1928.

Educated at Harris Academy in Dundee, Smith graduated with a first in Classics at the University of St Andrews and obtained a doctorate in Modern Languages from the University of Marburg. He became a lecturer in German at the University in 1907, and in 1919 he was appointed to the new William Jacks Chair of Modern Languages.

Smith was an excellent pianist and organist at the College Church in Kelvingrove. He was a founder of the University Orchestral Society in 1923 and its Conductor until 1930.
