Biography of William Paton Ker
The WP Ker Lectureship is named for the literary scholar William Paton Ker (1855-1923).
Born in Glasgow, Ker studied at the University and went to Balliol College Oxford as a Snell Exhibitioner. He was elected a Fellow of All Souls College in 1879. He was Professor of English Literature and History at University College of South Wales, 1883-1889, and Quain Professor of English Language and Literature at University College, London, 1889-1922. He became Director of the new Department of Scandinavian Studies at UCL in 1917 and he was Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1920 until his death.
