Prof Ferguson

Thomas Ferguson (1900-1977) was Henry Mechan Professor of Public Health from 1944 to 1964. He was President of the football section of the University Athletics Club and bequeathed his estate to the University in 1977, with the instruction that the money be used to foster the social side of University life.

Ferguson attended the University of Edinburgh and graduated MB, ChB in 1922, DPH in 1923, and MD (Commended) in 1924. He was appointed to the Henry Mechan Chair of Public Health in 1944 and served in various positions including those of HM Medical Inspector of Factories, Chairman of Committee on Carcenogenic Action of Mineral Oils and Chairman of the General Nursing Council, Scotland. He was Honorary Consultant Physician at Glasgow Western Infirmary and Falkirk Royal Infirmary. Among his many publications, The Dawn of Scottish Social Welfare and Scottish Social Welfare, 1864-1914 are regarded as classic studies of the origins and the evolution of the country's social and health services.
