Biography of Robert Marshall
Robert Marshall (d 1912), coal merchant, Glasgow, bequeathed the Grangehill Estate in Beith in Ayrshire to the University, to endow or assist in endowing a chair in Modern Languages. His gift, with those of James Clason-Harvie and others, was used in 1917 to found the Marshall Chair of Modern Romantic Languages, which became the Marshall Chair of French Language and Literature in 1966.
