Biography of James Fullarton Arnott
James Fullarton Arnott (1914-1982) was the University's first Professor of Drama, from 1973 until 1979.
Arnott graduated from the University in 1936 with an MA (Honours) in English. After studying at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, he became an assistant lecturer in the Department of English in 1939 and Senior Lecturer in 1962. In 1966 he was appointed head of the Drama Department and in 1973 he was appointed Professor. The Chair of Drama was renamed in his memory in 1996.
