Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland

Description

The Institute of Engineers in Scotland was founded in 1857 with WJ Macquorn Rankin, the Regius Professor of Civil and Mechanical Engineeering at the University, as its first President. The Scottish Shipbuilders Association was established in September 1860 and in 1865 it united with the IES to form what became the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland.

The James Watt Chair of Electrical Engineering and the James Watt Chair of Theory and Practice of Heat Engines were founded in 1921 by the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland, in commemoration of the centenary of the death of James Watt (1736-1773). The name of the latter chair was changed to Mechanical Engineering in 1951.
