Description

The Edward Caird Medal is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of Philosophy. It is named for Professor Edward Caird, who left the post of Professor of Moral Philosophy in 1893 to become Master of Balliol College, Oxford.

The medal was established during the session 1897/8, and the Court Minutes for 14th October 1897 note that, "a number of old students and personal friends, who desire to make a presentation to Professor Caird, had arranged that a portion of the presentation should take the form of a medal to be presented annually to the best student in the honours division of the Moral Philosopy class."
