Graham Brymner Thomas Jardine was born on the 3rd January 1892 at 5 Clifton Place, Sandyford, Glasgow, the son of Robert Jardine (1862-1933), a prominent Physician and Surgeon in Glasgow, and May Barbara Jardine (née Brymner) (1860-1922), who had married on the 12th July 1889 in Edinburgh. Graham was a pupil at the Glasgow Academy where he excelled before going up to University of Glasgow in 1908 to study Classics.
From the beginning his name featured in the prize lists and did so annually. In addition to the collection of first class certificates he earned in Ordinary Latin, Greek and Logic he was runner-up to the Cowan and Ramsay gold medals. He graduated with first class Honours in Classics in 1913. His academic successes continued at Oxford where he took a B.A.(Hons).
Graham took a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 13th Bn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, gazetted on the 13th July 1915. His battalion was attached to the 5th Bn. Cameronian Highlanders at the Battle of the Somme. On the 18th October 1916 Graham went missing at Le Sars-Baupaume and his parents were notified of the presumption of his death at their home, 29 Lacrosse Terrace, Glasgow. He was 24.
Lieutenant Graham Brymner Thomas Jardine is commemorated on the Wall of Remembrance at Warlencourt cemetery and remembered in his home city on the Glasgow Academy War Memorial.
