James Gilmour

James Gilmour was born in 1897, and was the youngest son of William and A. V. Gilmour. His father was a doctor, and the family resided in Govan, near to his father's work, and James attended Kelvinside Academy.
In 1915, James enrolled to study at the University of Glasgow. He matriculated in the faculty of Medicine, and took classes in Zoology, Chemistry, and Anatomy, as well as their practical counterparts. His time at University was very short, however, as he joined the Highland Light Infantry in a private in December of the same year.
James was quickly engaged in military action, but after being injured, was invalided home. After recovering he returned to the front in December 1917, having been newly commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Cameronians. He was involved in the Spring Offensive of 1918, and was killed on the 30th of March in the Somme region. He was 20 years old.
2nd Lieutenant James Gilmour is commemorated at the Pozieres Memorial in France, and on the University of Glasgow and Kelvinside Academy rolls of honour.
