Archibald was a member of the 15th Bn. Royal Scots, a battalion formed in September 1914 in Edinburgh by the Lord Provost and City. In 1915 the battalion moved in Troon and then Ripon and Sutton Veny before landing at Le Havre at the start of 1916. They fought at the Battle of the Somme and were also part of the Arras Offensive. This is where Private Archibald Young died on the 27th April 1917. He is commemorated on Bay 1 and 2 of the Arras Memorial in the Faubourg-d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, Pas de Calais, France.
