Robert Cuthbert Easton Moffat

Robert Cuthbert Easton Moffat was born on 19 June 1883 in Irvine, Ayrshire, to William and Agnes Moffat. His father was a draper, and the 1901 Census records the family at 6 Milliken Park, in Ayr. Robert matriculated in the Arts Faculty at the University of Glasgow in 1906, aged 23. By that time his father had died, and the Moffats were living at Wellwood, 25 Prestwick Road, Ayr. In his first year, he studied Maths and Latin. The following year he took classes in Logic, English and History, and in his final year, Education and Natural Philosophy. While at University, Robert studied concurrently for a teaching qualification from the Glasgow Provincial Training College, forerunner of Jordanhill College of Education, now the University of Strathclyde. He attended professional classes at the College from session 1906-07 to 1908-09, completing his training on 30 June 1909 to become a certificated teacher with additional qualifications to teach singing, drawing, woodwork and physical exercises in primary schools. He was appointed to a teaching post at Wallacetown School in Ayr from 9 August 1909, and graduated MA from the University of Glasgow on 18 November 1909.
