Donald McLaren was born on the 25th February 1894 at 73 Westmoreland Street, Gorbals, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. His father, Alexander McLaren (1849-1922), was a Spirit Merchant, and his mother was Matilda McLaren (nee Birch). Donald came to the University of Glasgow in 1914-15 to take a course in Scots Law. While he studied he was living with his parents at 78 Albert Road, Crosshill, Glasgow.

Lieutenant Donald McLaren of the 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers was attached to the 6th Battalionwhen he was killed in action on the 3rd May 1917 while fighting in the Battle of Arras. His name is inscribed on the Arras Memorial at Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery in Arras. He was 23 years old.
