John Mcintosh

John McIntosh was born in Whiteinch, Glasgow around 1893. His mother was Elizabeth Mcintosh and his father was John A MacIntosh who worked as a teacher. John lived at home with his parents during his studies at “Oakdene†38 Bishop’s Road, Partick, Glasgow.
He enrolled as a student at Glasgow University in 1912, aged 19, and took classes in the Arts faculty including Latin and Maths. In his second year he studied English and History. He excelled in his English Language and Literature class taught by Professor William MacNeile Dixon and won a prize. He was awarded the Lanfine bursary in 1914 which was twenty seven pounds given to the student achieving highest honours in English. In his third year he studied British History and English.
When World War 1 broke out he did not enrol in his final year of study instead joining the military. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 49th Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery. This Battery left for France on the 9th of March 1916.
He was killed in action on the 9th April 1918 at Vielle-Chapelle aged 24. He is remembered on the Loos memorial in Pas de Calais, France and Glasgow’s Roll of Honour.
