Edward John Howard (Reverend) MacIldowie

After his undergraduate degree he matriculated at the University of Glasgow, where he recorded his family home as 12 Caird Drive, Partick, and began his B.D. studies in the classes of Biblical Criticism, Divinity and Church History. Over the next three years his academic talents were well rewarded, as evidenced by the number of appearances his name made on the prize lists. His ten rankings included prizes in Hebrew and Church History. When he graduated B.D. in 1915 the Rev. Macildowie could have looked forward to a distinguished service in the church. Instead he looked to service in the army. He joined the university Officer Training Corps in 1915, and was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the Highland Light Infantry (9th Glasgow Highlander Bttn.) on the 18th of November the same year. Just a year later, on the 1st of November 1916 he was killed in action, as winter weather closed in on the Somme and drew one of the bloodiest events in military history to an end in stalemate. Rev. Edward Macildowie’s name is one of the 72,000 missing honoured for their part in the battle at Thiepval monument. He was 25.
