Aubrey Murray Mitchell Mackenzie

Aubrey Murray Mitchell Mackenzie (known as Murray) was born on the 22nd June 1895. His parents, Alexander Flyter Mackenzie and Hilda Maude Mackenzie (née Girling), had married in Woodbridge, Suffolk, England in 1893. His father, having graduated with an MD from Edinburgh University, worked as a Medical Practitioner – most likely in Glasgow, Murray’s birthplace.
Murray attended Queen’s Park Secondary School in his teenage years and lived at 4 Cromwell Square, Queen's Park, Glasgow. He did not enrol in the University of Glasgow after this, but was a cadet member of its Officer Training Corps 1915. Before enlisting in the Army, Murray was training as an apprentice Actuary.
He was gazetted to the 10th Bn. Seaforth Highlanders on the 16th November 1915, and served at the front for over a year. Murray was even Mentioned in Despatches; something reserved for individuals who showed great courage or resolve while serving.
2nd Lieutenant Aubrey Murray Mitchell Mackenzie was wounded at Beaumont-Hamel on the 21st November 1916, and died of his injuries, aged 21. He is now buried at Contay British Cemetery, France. Murray is remembered on the University’s Roll of Honour. He is also memorialised on a plaque for the fallen of Queen’s Park Secondary, which is now housed in Langside Library.
