Walter Logan

Walter Logan was born on the 19th March 1884, at 227 Cornwall Street, Govan, Lanarkshire. The son of a skilled marine engineer, also Walter Logan (1847-1918), and Elizabeth Logan (nee Poucher), who had married on the 11th August 1870 in Pollockshaws. Walter first attended school at Bellahouston Academy and continued to live locally in Carmichael Street, Govan, whilst studying at the University. He matriculated in 1904, studied Logic, French, and Education, but did not take exams, and left after one year.

Logan enlisted in February of 1915, and by September was already Acting Company Sergeant-Major, before receiving a commission in the 5th Bn. Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). He instructed recruits in the use of musketry at Claro Barracks in Yorkshire, and was then being attached to the 1st/6th Bn. South Staffordshire Regiment.

It was whilst serving with the South Staffordshire Regiment that Logan fell victim to an artillery barrage, and died on the 13th December 1916. His obituary records that 'he was much esteemed by all the officers and his men.'

2nd Lieutenant Walter Logan is buried in the Bienvillers Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
