George Alexander Lowe

George was educated at Hutchesons’ School, and later enrolled at the University of Glasgow as a medical student. He completed his first year there between 1914 and 1915; passing all his exams and even earning second-class certificates in Practical Zoology and Chemistry.

After completing his first year of University, he became a member of the Offices’ Training Corps at Glasgow. He was gazetted to the 14th Bn. Royal Scots on the 7th October 1915, and fought at the front for over a year before being killed in action on the 4th December 1916. George was nineteen years old. He is now buried at Brewery Orchard Cemetery, Bois-Grenier. The inscription on his cross reads, ‘This is the Happy Warrior. This is He.’

George’s name is recorded on the University of Glasgow’s Roll of Honour; as well as that of Evening Times. In Hutchesons’ Grammar School, there is a plaque to commemorate those lost in the two world wars; George’s name appears. Lastly, he is memorialised in Battlefield East Parish Church (now Clincarthill Parish); on a plaque and in a Book of Remembrance.
