James McDonald Matheson

James McDonald Matheson was born on the 28th October 1888 in Newton, Kiltearn, Ross-shire. He was one of five children born to William James Matheson (1831-1892) and Jane (Jeannie) Matheson (née McDonald) (1858-1939), who had married on the 5th November 1875 in Grantown Mains, Edinburgh.
James began his studies at the University of Edinburgh, passing the First and Second Professional Examinations for Medicine in 1907 and 1909 respectfully. He took courses in Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Anatomy, and Physiology at the University of Edinburgh, before joining the University of Glasgow. In March 1913 James passed the Third Professional Examination, having taken classes in Materia Medica and Therapeutics, and Pathology. In his final years James studied Surgery, Clinical Surgery, Practice of Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Midwifery, and Medical Jurisprudence and Public Health. James graduated MB ChB from the University of Glasgow on the 8th April 1916.
James had married Margaret Cossar Davidson on the 5th October 1911. They had two children, Lenora and William, during their marriage. The family lived at 37 Falcon Avenue, Edinburgh.
Captain James McDonald Matheson served with the Royal Army Medical Corps and went to Mesopotamia on the 7th July 1916. In 1917 he was attached to the 17th Bn. Middlesex Regiment in France when he was killed in action on the 30th November 1917, aged 29.
Captain James McDonald Matheson is commemorated in the Hermies Hill British Cemetery, Hermies, Pas-de-Calais, France.
