George McCracken was born on the 4th April 1894 at 74 Albert Road, Crosshill, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. He was the son of Thomas Dewar McCracken, a Wholesale Drapery Warehouseman, and Margaret McCracken (née Gibb), who had married on the 25th May 1880 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. George was an Arts student at the University, first enrolling when he was 20 years old to take classes in German and Mathematics. He resided at 79 Overdale Street, Langside, Glasgow.

In addition to his studies, George was a member of the University of Glasgow Officers' Training Corps and served as a cadet for one year before joining the 331st Siege Bty. Royal Garrison Artillery, where he served as a Gunner. Gunner George McCracken was killed in action on the 28th June 1917, and is buried at the Rolincourt Military Cemetery in France.
