David Burns Dempster

David was a member of the Glasgow University Officer Training Corps when he was granted a commission in 1915. He served with the 1st Battalion of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers at Gallipoli and at the Somme, and was wounded at Beaumont-Hamel. He later became attached to the Border Regiment in Flanders and was awarded the Military Cross for ‘conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in reorganising his own company and the company on his right when all the officers were out of action.’ He was reported as missing in action on the 26th of October 1917. He is named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Dumfries have commemorated him on their War Memorial, the Dumfries Academy Memorial and the St George's Church memorial.
