William Alexander Stuart

William Alexander Stuart was born on 12th May 1882 into a medical family. His father, Robert Wilson Stuart was a physician and surgeon, married to Ann Caldwell Ireland. William was the eldest of three brothers and the family lived at 42 Wilton Gardens at the time he matriculated in the Faculty of Medicine in 1900. His path through Medicine was a smooth one, distinguished by a clutch of distinction and merit certificates, seven in all, including a prize in Diseases of the Ear. He graduated on 18th July 1905 among the ablest in his year.
On the 1st of September 1915 he took a commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps and served with the 1/1st Lowland Field Ambulance. A month later he was in Gallipoli before landing in Egypt in January 1916. It was from that embattled front line that he was invalided home in June 1916. In September of that year he was discharged and died the following month at home in Carlton Terrace, Glasgow some time between the evening of the 29th and the morning of the 30th October. The cause of death was uncertain and occasioned the fiscal to probe a little and be satisfied that it was due to ‘probable accidental suffocation’. Undoubtedly it was the result of the condition he sustained in war. He was 34. Lieutenant William Alexander Stuart was buried at Glasgow Western Necropolis and is remembered on the war memorial plaque at the Royal Infirmary, where he had been a Resident.
