William Aloysius Stuart

William joined the University of Glasgow in 1911, at the age of 23. In his first year he took classes in Latin and Greek, followed by Intermediate Latin, English and Logic in his second year. In his final year he took classes in Geography and Education, and graduated MA from the University of Glasgow on the 21st November 1914. He proceeded to take a one-year postgraduate teacher training course at the Glasgow Provincial Training College, forerunner of Jordanhill College of Education, now the University of Strathclyde. He was then living at 165 Bellfield Street in Dennistoun, Glasgow. The student registers reveal that William was graded ‘unsatisfactory’ in Phonetics and Voice Production, but did well enough in the other components of his course to attain the Teacher’s General Certificate, which qualified him to teach in primary schools. He was recognised as a Certificated Teacher from 1st October 1915.

William was a School Teacher at the time of his marriage to Helena Jane McLellan, a Photographer's Clerkess, on the 14th June 1916, at St Joseph's Chapel, Dundee. At that time, he was stationed at Kinross Camp, Kinross, with the 13th Bn. and later the 18th Bn. Highland Light Infantry.

Lieutenant William Aloysius Stuart was killed in action on the 26th May 1917, aged 28, near Peronne, Somme, France. He is buried in the La Chapelette British and Indian Cemetery in Peronne. His classmate at the Glasgow Provincial Training College, Moses Forman had been mortally wounded at the Battle of Arras several weeks previously. Lieutenant William Aloysius Stuart is remembered on the Roll of Honour of the Glasgow Provincial Committee for the Training of Teachers and on the Glasgow Provincial Training College war memorial, located in the David Stow Building on the former Jordanhill Campus.
