William Wallace

William Wallace was born in 1897 to William and Mary A Wallace, who lived in Ibrox in Glasgow. He enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1914 at the age of 17 years old. He belonged to the Engineering Science department, and his classes for his first and only year of University included Maths, Chemistry, Natural Philosophy, and Physics. William did not complete a matriculation slip for the following year, so it can be presumed that his studies were interrupted by the war during his first year of study.

During the war, he served as a Lieutenant for the 3rd Battalion Cameron Highlanders, who were involved in the battle of Passchendaele, where it is believed he perished. He died on the 17th November 1917 aged 20, and is buried at Oxford Road Cemetery in Belgium. His headstone bears an inscription commissioned by his parents that reads: “He was – think of all a son should be and he was that.”
