James Gordon Rennie

The eldest son of Dr James S and Annie G Rennie, of 17 Church Street, Coatbridge, James was a pupil, first at Gartsherrie Academy and then, from 1905 to 1911, at the Glasgow High School. He matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1911 to study medicine, as his father had.
Aged 22 in the autumn of 1915 he matriculated for a fifth year in medicine but war ended his studies prematurely and he signed up for the army in the spring of 1916 as a Private in the 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles).
After just three months' training he left for France early in July. He did well in training, and as a result he was given the hazardous post of Lewis Machine Gunner. His active service was short. He was killed in action on 23rd October 1916, aged 23. He is commemorated on Panel 4D of the Thiepval Memorial.
