Charles Mill Nicol

Charles Mill Nicol was born on the 15th November 1887 at 15 Forsyth Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire. His father, John Smith Nicol was a Coal Merchant, and his mother, Agnes Berwick Nicol (nÃ©e Mill), who had married on the 1st November 1881, also in Greenock. He had two brothers, Alexander, also known as Sandy and John and they attened Greenock Academy.

Charles came to the University of Glasgow in 1904 to study for a medical degree. He was a successful student and during his time won prizes in: Physics, Clinical Surgery and Practice of Medicine. He was also a demonstrator in Operative Surgery with Sir William Macewen. He graduated 13th July 1909.

Following his graduation Charles joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and in 1912 was made Captain. In 1913 he was promoted again and was gazetted to the Staff as Deputy-Assistant-Director of Medical Services. Upon the outbreak of war he was in Egypt but was sent to the Western Front were he was mentioned by Viscount French in despatches. He died on 23rd October 1916 at Dervilles Wood, fighting with the 27th Field Ambulance, 9th (Scottish) Division. He was aged just 28 years old and is buried in the Couin British Cemetery.
