William Fletcher Roxburgh
Lieutenant William Fletcher Roxburgh was born in 1891, and was the son of Robert and Jacobina Roxburgh. He was educated at Sedburgh Preporatory school in Yorkshire. After completing his education he joined the family’s business, Roxburgh Stockholders. While working he was also a member of the University of Glasgow's OTC.
When war broke out, Roxburgh served as part of the 7th Battalion Highland Light Infantry. He joined the Highland Light Infantry as a Private in September 1914, and was made a 2nd Lieutenant on the 20th of November of the same year. Roxburgh had success in the army, and was awarded the Victory and British War Medals. His younger brother also served in the war, joining the Northumberland Fusiliers.
It was likely that Roxburgh died during the Spring Offensive of 1918, which started on the 21st March 1918. He died, aged 27, on the 23rd March 1918, and is commemorated at the Arras memorial in Pas de Calais, a site dedicated to those who died on the Western Front with no known grave. Roxburgh is remembered on the University of Glasgow Roll of Honour and in the Pollokshields Church Book of Remembrance.
