Archibald McKerrow Russell

Archibald McKerrow Russell of “Plevuaâ€, Newmains in Lanarkshire, was born on the 25th August 1890. He was the only son of Thomas Russell, a Mining Engineer with the Coltness Iron Co Ltd, and Janet Russell (nee Stewart).
He matriculated at the University of Glasgow on the 19th August 1909, aged 18, taking classes including Chemistry, Zoology and Physics and achieving a Second Class certificate in Physics the same year. He graduated MB ChB from the University on the 20th April 1914 at the age of 24.
Archibald served as a Surgeon with the Royal Navy, aboard HMS Macedonia, an armed merchant cruiser.
On the 16th May 1917, he was travelling aboard the merchant ship HMHS Highland Corrie in the English Channel, when she was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UB-40. Surgeon Archibald McKerrow Russell was one of five crew lost in this action. He is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
