James Young Craig

In 1914 he undertook a year of study at the University of Glasgow, studying mercantile law at age 20. He resided with his mother at 36 Cathcart Road, Glasgow. James was also on the staff of a firm of chartered accountants in Glasgow, and was likely working towards qualifying as a professional accountant himself. Whilst at University, James served as a cadet of the University O.T.C.

On receiving his commission, he was gazetted to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in July, 1915. After initially serving with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders he later became attached to the Kind’s African Rifles and took part in the fighting in German East Africa. He died of wounds received in action in East Africa on October 24th 1917. He was aged 23.

Lieutenant James Young Craig is buried at Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery in Tanzania. His headstone reads 'In Jesu's Keeping'.
