Robert Fletcher Colquhoun

Robert first attended the University of Glasgow between 1903 and 1906, undertaking the subjects required to be a teacher. He was enrolled at Jordanhill Teacher Training College at the same time. He then did not matriculate at the University until 1913, when he returned to Glasgow to complete his degree. The reasons for this break are not clear, but he returned in 1913 to complete his qualification in Maths, and graduated with an MA the following year.

Before enlisting in the army, Robert was an Assistant Master in one of Glasgow’s schools, and had married Mary B. Hay Colquhoun, who died sometime before his own death. He was gazetted to 13th Highland Light Infantry in December of 1914, and promoted to Lieutenant in October 1915. He was killed in action on the 16th November 1916, in the final days of the Battle of the Somme. He had just turned thirty-two. He is now buried at Thiepval, France.

Robert’s name is included on University of Glasgow’s Roll of Honour. He was also remembered locally, on a memorial in his hometown of Bishopbriggs; and on the memorial for the students and graduates of Jordanhill.
