John Carmichael

John Carmichael was the son of Archibald and Charlotte Carmichael, and grew up on in Tarbet, next to Loch Lomond. He attended Tarbet Public High School and Helensburgh Hermitage School, where he was the dux of his year in 1911. His strong academic start made him the perfect candidate for the University of Glasgow.
John joined the University as a student, and became a member of the University's Officers' Training Corps. He enlisted in November 1914, joining the Scottish Rifles before transferring to the Durham Light Infantry. He was killed on the 25th March 1918 from wounds sustained in action. He was 24 years of age.
His headstone can be found at Doullens Communal Cemetry, which bares the inscription ‘a loving son and brother at rest’. He is also remembered on the University of Glasgow's Roll of Honour.
